InSpikeLee’sproductionfilmworkof“JungleFeverx27;x27;,atragicstorycallingoutthestrugglesandhardshipsofinter-racialromance(inthiscontext,ablackversuswhiteromanticrelationship,ortobemoredirect,aloveaffairinitsveryessence)hasbeenpresentedandshowntoitsaudiences,whichisapparentlyalsothefirstevertimecross-raceromancehasbecameoneofthemostimportantmain/centralfocustopicsofthedirector(theaudiencescouldbeabletotellthisfromwatchingtheprecedingfilmpieceof“Mo’BetterBlues”,whichLeehappenedtotouchabitonthistopicasasidelineorsideplot).However,thisspecificfilmworkisindeedwaymorethansimply/merelybeingasadtaleofafailedinter-racialromanceatwork,butshouldratherbeinterpretedandseenassomethingwhichgoes/dwelveswaydeeperthanthatofthesurfacevalue,thatitisaboutthesteadyandfirmracialbarriersthathavebeenintentionallybuilt/constructedup,asthesenseofhighwalls/tallupperfencesbeingconstructedbetweenthedominantgroup(Caucasianwhites)andminorityraces(inthespecificcaseofthisparticularmovie,AfricanAmericans)lastingfromgenerationsagountilnowatthiscurrentpoint,aswellasaboutthesubtlycovert,yetwithoutaquestiondeep-rootedracismthatisalsolong-lastingandapparentlystillon-going,whichbyitselfcouldprobablybeeasiesttotellandobservewithintheseeminglynormalday-to-dayinteractionsbetweendifferentracesthemselves,resultingandarisingfromthatcrawlinguneasyfeeling,whichcannotbetrackedtoitsveryoriginwithclearcertainty.Ontheoutsidesurfaceorsimplybasedonfirstimpression,asaquitesuccessfulbusinessmanlivingin/residingwithinthebustingBigApplehimself,Flipperhasnearlyeverythinggoingforhim,atleastthatwasthecasebeforehemetwithAngie,anattractiveItalian-Americanyoungwomanwhowasbeingintroducedtothecooperationtoworkwithhim.Butasonecouldstillsensesomewhat,maybeitisthecasethattherewerealreadypreviouscracksexistinginthemarriageitself,ormaybeFlipperhassimplygottenabitboredoutbytheunchangingdailyroutinesofthemarriedlife,anyways,hehaslatergottenhimselfintothistotal“guilty-pleasure”likeaffairwithhisco-workerAngie,whomhehasonlyknownforarathershortperiodoftime,andwhichdrasticallychanged/alteredhisentirelifepathtoadifferentdirection.Throughoutthisentirefilmpiecehere,SpikeLeehasmainlyandmostlycastedhisfocus/attentiononthespecificclassofpeoplewhoareusuallyreferredtoasthe“workingclasswhites”,andhisheavilyconcentratedportrayalsofthemarenotmuchofpositiveones,butrather,moreinacriticalmannerandlight.Thiscanbeclearlyseenwithinalotofdifferentscenescomingfromthefilmitself,especiallythatoneparticularsceneoftheso-called“warcommittee/council”-whenFlipperhappenstohaveahugedisagreement,argument,andquarrelwithtwoofhisCaucasianco-workersinaprivateofficemeeting/conferencesettingwithinthecorporationwhichheworksat,whichtheargumentkeepsonescalatingtothenextlevel,whichmade/urgedFlippertobesayingsomethinglike“Icanseethatyouguyshaveabsolutelynorespectforme”straighttotheothermen’sfaces,andthenwalkedoutonthem.Theactualselfishness/self-centeredness,orperhaps,“racialego’whichthesetwowhiteco-workershappentocarrywiththemhasbeenrevealedthroughthisparticularscenedepictingthecertainconflictwhichhappened,althoughinaquitesubtleandcovertsense,butisstillpossibletospot.Itisindeed“racialprejudicex27;x27;initsbestandmostappropriatedescription,inasocialsituationwherethethreemenareeachsupposedtobestatusequalwitheachother.Thatisexactlythereasonwhythespecificracialapproachofso-called“colorblindness”couldoftentimesbeunimaginablyharminganddangerous,becauseashumanbeingsaltogetherlivinginacolorblindsocietythatway,forsurewithoutadoubtcreatesmoreoftheexcusesforwhitesingeneraltodenytheirinternalracism/racistattitudes/racialegoorprejudicewhichultimatelyresultsinthesubtle/covertmis-treatmentsofotherminorityracesoutthere,exactlylikewhatFlipperhappenedtoexperiencewithandgothroughwithinthisspecificscenehimself.Asgenerationspassbyandasthesocietyprogressivelydevelops,oneobviousculturalphenomenonorpatternthatcouldbeeasilyseenandobserved,istheseemingly“lessening’ofracialdiscriminations/racialmis-treatmentsouttherewithinthegeneralsocialenvironmentasawhole,butthisfeelingbyitselfcouldbemerelyanillusionorafalsesenseofassumption,fortheactualrealityandtruthisthat,mostoftentimesforthecurrentera,whatwehappentoseeandexperiencethemostare,thatoftheoldandmedievalcasesofdirectoutwardactionsintermsofphysicalharms/violencesbeinginflicteduponminoritygroupindividualsbackthencenturiesago,havesincebeingreplaced/exchangedby,aswellasswitchedtoabrandnewformofverymuchsubtlycovertracialdiscriminations,whichisbeingembeddedwithinalmosteachandeverycornerofthe21stcenturymodernsociety,despiteandnomatterofourownpersonaldegree/levelofrecognitions,awarenesses,orbetterjudgmentstothosedifferentsituationsandcircumstancesoutthere.Asapossibleresult,themostreasonableaswellaslogicalconclusionwhichcouldbedrawnfromthat,wouldthusprobablybesomethingthatgoeslikethis:Thereisstillindeed,alonglongwaytogoaswellasmountainsaftermountainstoclimb,awaitingaheadforallofusherebeingascollectivehomosapiens/humanbeingslivingonthisearth,atleastintermsofthegeneralracialequityaspectsandsidesofthingsforsure.本
