没时间读完的朋友,简单总结就是导演说了,结尾是happyending,不是loop,兄弟俩逃出生天。http://collider.com/the-endless-explained-interview/‘TheEndless’FilmmakersonTheirTrippyMythologyDecipheringThatEndingThisweek,JustinBensonandAaronMoorhead‘sTheEndlessrollsoutonBlu-rayanddigital,whichmeansthatfolksnationwidearegoingtobeunravellingtheheadtriphorrorsofthefilm’sunnerving,mysteriousLovecraftianmythologyandlookingforsomeanswers.Earlierthismonth,Ipublishedthefirstpartofmyconversationwiththefilmmakingduo,whichspannedfromtheduo’searlyideasforexpandingtheuniversetheybuiltintheirfirstfilm,Resolution,totheexperienceoftakingthefinishedversionTheEndlessaroundtheworld.Andnowthatthemoviehashitmoretheaters,itseemslikeagoodtimetoserveupthespoileryportionoftheinterview,whichdivesintowhattomakeofthefilm’smysteriousmythologyandending.Ifyouneedarefresher,TheEndlessfollowsBensonandMoorheadasJustinandAaron(yes,they’reusingtheirrealnames,butno,they’renoplayingthemselves),apairofbickeringbrothersalwaysatoddswhoreturntotheUFOdeathculttheyescapedaskidsinsearchofanswers.Exceptwhentheygetthere,theydon’tfindaUFOdeathcultatall,butahappyandhealthy,ifadmittedlyweirdandunsettling,communeofpeoplelivinglifeontheirownterms.Theyalsofindsomethingmoresinisterlurkinginthehillsidesoftheremotecamp—anunseen,oppressivepresencethatcommunicatesthroughvoyeuristicphotographsandvideoclips,trappingpeopleintime-loopprisonswhereitmanipulatesandtormentsthemintovarioushorrificfatesforitsownamusement.Afrontiersmantrappedinaloopofmereseconds,amanwhohastokillhimselfeveryfewminutestopreventaworsefate,andthelocalcult,whohaveitrelativelyeasybycomparison—livingoutadecentlylongthree-moonloopthatendswiththeir“ascension,”akabeingshreddedintobloodybits.Yikes.Atleasttheydon’thavetoworryaboutaging.ImageviaWellGoUSAAndofcourse,there’sthereturnofMike(PeterCiella)andChris(VinnyCurran)fromResolution,whoaretrappedinthebitterweek-longloopofforcedsobrietyandfailingfriendshipdetailedinthe2002film.TheunseenevilinTheEndlessisthesamechillingcosmicthreatwemetinResolution,andthefilmssharemorecrossoversthanyou’dprobablyimagineonafirstwatch,soyou’relookingformoreanswersonTheEndless,arewatchofResolutionistheperfectplacetostart.OrfirstwatchifyoucaughtTheEndlessfirst,whichworksjustaswell.However,ifyou’relookingforaneasyplay-by-playexplanationofwhatgoesdowninthefilm,you’renotgoingtogetitfromBensonandMoorhead,whoinsisteverythingyouneedtosolvethepuzzlesoftheirunconventionalcinematicuniversecanbefoundrightthereonscreen.However,theduowasmorethanhappytodiveintotheideationbehindthefilm’smythologyandthemindsetbehindendingitthewaytheydid,socheckouttheinterviewbelowforadiscussionofthedifferentwaystheir“monster”isrevealedthroughthecharactersandsettingsinthefilm,theideasthathelpedinspiretheunseenmenace,andwhytheendingismoreaboutcharacterpayoffthanansweringspecificquestions.Iknowyouguyshavesaidyouhavethiswholemythologytotallydownfromtoptotail.WasthatsomethingthatyouhadalreadyachievedatthetimeofResolutionordidthatcomelater?JUSTINBENSON:It’sdefinitelyexpanded.AARONMOORHEAD:Therulesdidn’tchange.BENSON:ButlikewithResolutiontherewere…Inbothofthesemovies,therehavebeenmassivedocumentsofthingsthatpeopleneversee.Andit’sreallycoolbecausewe’reprettysurepeoplefeelthesethingsinthemovie.Thethingsthatareintothat.ButlikeinthecaseofResolution,forexample.TheunseenantagonistofResolution,whichisthesameunseenantagonistinTheEndless,obviously.ExceptinResolution,thepointofviewofthewholefilmisfromtheunseenantagonist.Therewaslikeamassivedocumentthatwentintoeverythingaboutthat“monster”thatwenttooursounddesignertohelpthemdesignthesoundofthewholefilm.SothatexistedduringResolutionandtherearethingsinthatdocumentthatendedupmoreconspicuousinTheEndlessthanexpandedupon.That’sjustlikeoneexampleofonething.Whenitcomestohownaileddownthemythologyis…Whenthecamerapullsbackonthatcanyonandyouseeallthosebubbles,thetimeprisons,wouldyoubeabletolookatthatshotandsayexactlywhat’shappeningineachoneofthem?ImageviaWellGoUSAMOORHEAD:Icantellyouhowlongthoseloopsare,whentheyreset,andallofthat.Thatexactarea,weknowitprettywell.Andthat’sdesert,sothere’sawholebunchofpooranimals.It’sprobablysomethinglikethat,butIwouldn’tsaythatwehaveanentiremapoftheworldandwho’sinit.Butitwouldn’tbehardtotheorize.Wedefinitelyhaveenough.Soitwouldbeprettyeasytotakeagoodgander.Andthen,thelittlesequencethat—themusictrimmingsforthemontagethatfollowsJustinandAaronwalkingpastthebigtotemandit’sinthesortofmonolithcarvedmonsterlookingthing.BENSON:Therustydragonsculpture.MOORHEAD:Andtherustydragonsculpture.Sothosewouldallbeindividualloopsthathavedevelopedtheirownsub-culturesandhavetheirowninterpretationofwhatthisunseenantagonistis.Dependingonhowtheysawit,thestateofmindthey’rein,andtheirownpersonalities,andallofthat.Andthatthesethingsthey’vecreatedareartisticrepresentationsofhowtheyseetheantagonist.Whetherthey’regoingspecificallythroughtheloopyouseeinthedistance,becausetheydowalkoff,thatwedon’tknow.Andluckily,weonlyshotin4Ksoyoucan’treallypunchin.[Laughs]BENSON:Andwhat’sfunnyis…it’sweirdhowimportantthatsequencewastousbecauseinthemoviewebasically,theoldestloopthatyoueverseeiswhat,1800something?Somekindoffrontiersmanlikeinatent,butwehaveanon-existentEasterIslandtypesubculturethatdevelopeditsownkindofmythologyaroundit.Clearly.Andofcourse,NativeAmericanswiththetotempole.Buteventhemonolithtous—whichiskindofthebigimageofthefilmanyways—tous.it’ssupposedtoscarethehelloutofyouwhenyourealizethat’swhatthatis.Whenyourealizethat,that’stheantagonistofthefilmasseenbypeoplethataresoancientthey’regoneinAmerica.Inasimilarvein,alongwiththosemonolithsIlovedthewaysweseethispresenceinterpretedthroughtheeyesofthecharactersinthefilm,likeLizzie’sartandHal’sequation.Whatwasyourprocessofcreatingallthesedifferentunderstandingsofthisonebeing?MOORHEAD:Imean,that’ssomethingthatdidstartwithResolutionbutit’ssosmall.It’ssosmall.It’slikeliterallythere’sajournalrunningduringthecreditssequenceofResolution.It’sabunchofmonstersketches,andthatwouldhavebeenwhattheFrenchresearchersinResolutionwereseeingitas.Sothatgoeswayback.Idon’tevenrememberanymorewhattheinspirationforthatwas.Besidesthefactthat,unlessyoucangetGiger,theguywhodidAlien,unlessyouhaveadesigneronthatleveltobuildamonster…We’rejusttryingtofigureoutwaysthatwecanpresentitvisuallywhenweneedtoatleasthintatsomethingandnotjustshownothing,always.Andinthiscase,wegettoshowitthroughsketches,andthroughsculptures,andthingslikethat.ImageviaWellGoUSAInthecaseofSpring,weshowedamonsterbecausethepremisealludedtonatureasbeingourdesigner.Andsincewedon’thaveourownGiger,wecomeupwiththese,hopefullyinteresting,cleverwaystoshowanotherworldlybeingor“monster”anditwon’tbereallyuneventful.Imeanifyouwantedtopouraglassofwine,onadarknightandthinkaboutit.There’sthisideaofeverycivilizationhasdevelopedanideaofadeityandaGod.Andtheirinterpretationofithastrickleddownintoourreligionstoday.Ordiedout.Butinthesameway,theirvisualizationsofithavelookedsowildlydifferent.Andalotofthetimethere’stheideathat…There’stwoideas.Oneis,whatifit’sthesamething?Whatifthey’reallthesamething?Ofcourse,unifiedreligiontheory,whichiskindofanideathatweplaywith.Butwe’remergingitwiththeideaof,whatifwasn’tGod?Whatifitwasjustamonster?Orwhatifpeoplewithporphyriawereseenasvampires?Youknow,thatkindofanideawhereit’slike,“Oh,there’snothingmetaphysicalaboutit.”Obviously,ourmovie’smetaphysical.Butwhatifitwasanaturalphenomenonthatpeoplejusttriedtointerpretasagod.Andthat’salotofwhatwe’retalkingaboutwiththis;theysawitasGodandit’sactuallyjustthisthing.BENSON:Andasyousayingthat,Ijustrememberedwhereitcomesfrom.Itcomesfrom…Thisisadeepcut.There’saguynamedJohnKeel,who’stheguywhowroteTheMothmanProphecies.Thebookisverydifferentfromthemovie.It’snotafictionalnarrative.It’ssortofajournalist’saccountofwhathappenedinanareaoveraperiodoftime.Hewroteawholecollectionofotherbooks.TheonethatI’vereadisOurHauntedPlanetandwhatit’sbasicallyaboutisthisconceptofultra-terrestrials.I’mnotsayingitisanultra-terrestrialinthismovie,buttheideaisthatthroughouthumanhistorywheneverhumanbeingssawsomethingandinterpreteditasbeinglike,“Oh,Isawsomething.Thatwasanangelfromthebible.”Or,“Thatwasademon.”Or,“Thatwasanextraterrestrialbeing.”“ThatwastheMeninBlack.”“ThatwastheMothman.”Whatever.Thatit’sactuallyalwaysthesamething.Inhiscase,hewasarguingthatitwasthisthingcalledanultraterrestrial.Thatjustbasically,somethingthathadbeenhereamongus,alwaysmanipulatingthesituationandeveryonejustseeingitdifferentlydependingontheirculture.Soit’svaguelywheretheideacomesfrom.Ifyoucouldimagine,therearesomanyspeciesthatwehaven’tyetcatalogedintheAmazon.Thingslikethat.Imagineifthere’slikeanenormousblindspotthatwejustcompletelymissed;onereallybigthing.Again,that’snotwhat’sinTheEndlessbutit’sthatidea.Idohaveoneveryspecificquestion.Arewemeanttointerpretattheendwhereweseetheimageoftwocarscomingintoacollision,thatithasanythingtodowiththecarcrashthatputthemthereinthefirstplace?MOORHEAD:No.That’saninterestingonewherewerealizedthatwasanunintentionalthing.About10%percentofpeople,they’llkindofhavethatquestionoflike,“Dothey?”WhenIwatchResolutionandTheEndlessbacktoback,somethingIhadnotpickedupthefirsttimewas,theyseemalmostoppositeendingmoments.ResolutionendsonafeelingofhelplessnessandbeingtrappedandTheEndlessisallaboutbreakingfree.Wasthatintentionallydesignedforthosetwoendingstobeonoppositeendsoftheemotionalspectrum?MOORHEAD:Oh,that’sfunny.I’mgoingtogiveyouayesandno.IthinkafterSpring,wegotaddictedtooptimisticendings.Ithinkwerealizedthatwearejustoptimisticpeopleandsayinglike,“You’refuckednomatterwhat”isjustnotourfeelingaboutthewaythatlifeis,oratleastthemessagethatwewanttoputoutintotheworld.Andalso,frankly,itmorecomesdowntotheconstructofTheEndlesswhere,ifyou’retalkinginreallybroadtermsaboutthemovie.Ifyou’retalkingaboutthefactthatitsays,“Breakoutofyourcycleorbedoomedtorepeathistoryforever.”Itseemslikeweshouldbeshowingwhatitlooksliketobreakoutofyourcycle.Andlike,“Doesthathelpyou?”Idon’tthinkit’samoralasmuchasit’sanexplorationofit.Becausetherearepeoplethatdoenjoyitinsidetheircycle.Imean,thecultattheend.Andyoudon’tevenfeelbadforthem.Alittlebit,butit’smoremelancholy.It’slike,“Oh.Theykindofenjoyitthere.”ButIthinkthatitwouldhavebeenuntruthfulforourselvesifwe’dendeditasdarkasResolutionhadended.BENSON:Yeah.Itjustseemedlikeweknow,yesthereisaveryliteralanswertothemovie.Andtheanswersinthefilm…Itmaytakeafewviewings,buteverything’sveryliteralandalltheevidence,ifyouwanttocallitthat,isthere.Intermsof,where’sthemovieendinginthesenseofthesupernatural,andotherworldly,andthesci-fiaspects,andallthat.Butthethingthat’sdefinite,that’sthere,thatwasthemostimportanttous,wasjustthatyou’dseethattherewasatransformationintheinterpersonalrelationshipbetweenthesetwobrothers.Andthatyou’dseethattransformationinjustareallyunderstatedgesture.Andthattheemotionalsatisfactionshouldcomefromthat.Ithinkanythingelsebeyondthat,wedothingsstylisticallytokindoflikepokethemysterypartofpeople’sbrainsalittlebit.Oneexampleisthatit’sahardcutgoingout.Thingslikethatwherejustlikeyousitthereandyougo,“Oh,wait.There’sanotherpieceofthepuzzletofigureout.”Tothinkaboutlonger.It’sthingslikethat.Butthere’sdefinitelyoneanswertothesci-fipartofit.MOORHEAD:Actuallygoingbacktoyourquestions,Ijustrememberedwhenyousaid,“Peoplewhohaveviewedthemoviemultipletimes.”There’ssomethingthat’saninterestingthingwe’verealizes.OurmovieskindofexistinwhatpeoplehavecalledaLynchiansortofuniversewherejustthingsarealittleoffandallofthat.Ihadn’tseenalmostanyLynchwhenthatcomparisonstarted,butwhat’sinterestingis,alloftheanswerstothemovieare,Ipromiseyou,they’reinthemovie.Theyarethere.It’snotadreamlogicsituation.We’renotbeingdeliberatelyobtuse.Wejustwanttotellamysterythat’sgotalotofdepthtoit.Andwejustdon’twanttolayitalloutonthetablebutthey’reinthere.Ifyouthinkaboutitlongenoughandhardenough.Andyouknow,youmighthavetotakeacoupleof,notleapsoflogicbutleapsoffaiththatlike,“Okay.Thatiswhattheymeant.”Somethinglikethat.Butourmoviesaremeanttobe,Iguessliteral.Thatmightbethewordforit.Theyaremeanttobetellingafullstory.
