Amsterdam(5/10stars)TheArtofCameosDespitethefilm’slavishingcast,Amsterdamissimplyacelebrity-busted,all-about-appearance,advocating-love-in-center-of-corruptionpieceofwork.ThoughwithaccomplishedactorsandactresseslikeChristianBale,MargotRobbie,RobertDeNiro,andRamiMalek,allcharactersareinsufferablyplain,staticthroughoutthestoryline,andareunimaginablyhorrendouswhenitcomestodialogues,whicharesurfeitedwithemotionlessconveyanceswithoutthesupportofconvincingperformances.Infact,allthecharactersseemtohavebeenpushedbythescripttoconverse,react,andmovealongtheplot.Aftertheinsipidtwoactsofelaborationandforeshadowing,themovieconcludesinratherdecentfinale,wherepower-hungrynazism-supportingbureaucratscollidewiththeangelicMargotRobbieandfriends-“decent”meanssomewhatcommendableinthisfilm,whichisequivalenttobelowaverageforothermovies.WhywouldthetalenteddirectorofSilverLiningsPlaybookpayadozenofrenownedactors,andemployingImax,justtoproducesuchaflavorlessresult?Ifthiswasnotmy100thmoviereview,Iwould’vegivenAmsterdama4star.
