ThefilmbeginswiththemaincharacterIvanYermakov(AlexeiChadov)beinginterviewed,andashebeginshisstorythefilmscutsintotheyear2000duringtheSecondChechenWar,afterthefallofGroznyaChechenwarlordAslanGugayev(GiorgiGurgulia)runsacampnexttoanaulinthehighlandsofChechnya.DespitehavingsecureincomefromhisorganizedcrimegangsinMoscow,SaintPeterburgandSamaraaswellassomelegitimatebusinessthere,hetakesjoyinkidnapping,sincethatismorepatrioticandmilitantthanrandomcrime.BothIvanandhiscomradeFedkawereenslavedaftertheyweretakenprisonersinearly2000.TheyalsohadtosharetheiraccommodationwithacommercialRussian-JewishhostageSemyonfromVladikavkaz,whowasheldforransom.
Howeverthatparticulardaytheywerejoinedbytwomore,anEnglishcouple,theatreactorsJohnBoyle(IanKelly)andhisfiancéeMargaret(IngeborgaDapkūnait?).TheywerekidnappedinGeorgiaduringtheirtourthereperformingShakespeare"sHamletwhoJohnplayed.Ivan,havingpre-draftexperiencewithcomputers,knewalittleEnglishandnotonlywasheatranslatorforJohn;hewasalsoentrustedbyAslantoutilizetheInternetforcommunication.Thefivesharedshockinglivingconditionsinapit,andeveryonceinawhiletheChechenswouldshowhowfartheywouldgotogettheirway,throughactionslikepubliclybeheadingtwoRussianservicemenandseveringSemyon"sfingeronebyoneforransomdelays.
Afterawhileoflivinginthisordeal,Semyonisdraggedaway(presumablykilled)andthefourarerelocatedtoanevenmoreremotebasewheretheirquartersarenowapitwhichisalreadyoccupiedbyacrippledRussianCaptainMedvedev(SergeiBodrov,Jr.)(nohintofrelationorassociationtothecurrentRussianPresident,asitisatypicallygenericsurname),andalthoughthecaptainisparalyzedbyaninjury,hismerepresenceisenoughtoraiseeveryone"sspirit,inparticularMargaret"sandIvan"s.John"snegotiationswithEnglandtosecurethe2millionpoundsterlingransomgoesnowhereandAslanbecomesfedup,decidingtosecurehisthemoneybyreleasingJohn,alongwithIvanandPetka(sincethetwohavenopracticalvalueforhim),andkeepingMargaretwithanultimatumoffourweekstoget￡2million-otherwise,sheistoberapedandbeheaded.
BothIvanandPetyaaredischargedfromtheArmyandIvanvisitsMedvedev"sfamilyinSaintPetersburgbeforegoingreturningtohishomecityofTobolsk.John"s"rescue"gainshimprominencebackhomeinLondon,buthisattemptstosecureanyhelpfromtheBritishauthoritiesfail,asnonewishtopayransomtoterrorists.Realisingthathehastoselleverythingoff,heisapproachedbyaChannel4representativewhooffershim￡400,000inreturnforconcisedocumentaryfootageofhistravels.Acceptingtheoffer,JohnrushestoMoscow;however,allRussianauthoritiesrefusetoundertaketheexchangeas,again,nonenegotiatewithterrorists.ThefarthestJohngetsisanoffertopurchaseatelephonenumberofanex-KGBoperativewholivesinVladikavkazandspecialisesinransomexchanges.
JohnnexttravelstoTobolsk,tofindIvanthereandhirehimashistranslator.Backhome,Ivanfindsthatfewpositivechangeshaveoccurredduringhistwoyearabsence:hisparentshaveseparated,someofhisfriendswerekilledinlocalgangwars,andtheprospectsofbuildingacareerareasdimasever,evenmorefora(clearlytraumatized)veteranlikehimself.However,whatgothimtofollowJohnwasnottheprospectofwhatwasleftofthe￡35thousandJohnhadwithhim,butoutofhisrespectfortheCaptainandhisfamily.
StockingupatanarmysurplusstorethepairheadofftoVladikavkaz,butthepromisedex-KGBoperativeturnsouttobenothingbutacommoncrook.Desperate,IvandecidestogoandfindAslanaloneanddotheexchangebyhimself.LuckilyhebumpsintoasoldierwhoisabouttoleaveforChechnya.BothheandJohnaresmuggledinatruck,underatarpaulinpastthecheckpoints,inexchangeforIvan"s(personally-bought,high-quality,non-standardissue)combatboots.
Oncethere,thetwofirstambushandcommandeeraLandRover,stockedwitharmsanddrivenbyChechenterrorists.IntheensuringfirefightIvankillsallfourterrorists,butinsidethejeepawomanisalsokilled.TherealityofthiscatchesupwithJohnandemotionallyhenearlybreaksdownthatwarwasnotwhathecametowitness,IvaninturnispissedoffbecauseallthetimehehashelpedhimandinreturnJohnwasnotabletokillanyoneintheambush.

Theinitialhostilityanddistrustdiesdown,asRuslanfullycooperatesandwhenapproachingAslan"scamp(whichislocatedrightnexttotheGeorgianborder)tellsIvanofthestandingclanalbloodfeudbetweentheShamayevsandGuguayevs.HepromisestohelpIvanoutofhisgoodwill,inreturnforhisaidinenrollinghissonintoMoscow"sUniversity.BythetimetheyreachtheirdestinationIvantrustsRuslanwithfirearms.
Thethreethenassaultthecamp,wheredespiteAslan"soathtoAllahthatneitherMargaretnortheCaptainwillbehurt,JohndiscoversMargaretnakedandbruised,withobvioussignsofrape.Enraged,hechasesafterAslanandgunshimdownwithapistol.Aslan"sdeathwasneverintended,asIvanhopedtousehiminnegotiatingasafepassageandthenpayinghimoffwithwhatmoneytheyhadleftinreturn.
SoonenoughtheChechenfightersstartassaultingthecamp,andCaptainMedvedevsuggeststhattheyescapeviatheriverbyraft.Aftertravellingpartofthedistancethatway,thefivethencarrytheimmobilecaptaintoaChechenTowerandholdoffthesiegebeforethecalledin(viaAslan"ssatellitephone)Mi-24andMi-8flightofhelicoptergunshipsrelieveandrescuethegroup.
